In the 17th Century, present day Sierra Leone was used by British traders as a coastal trading post, involving timber, ivory, and later slaves. Following the American Revolution, Freetown, Sierra Leone became home to resettling black-loyalists and to thousands of liberated slaves.
​
In late 2015, the UN finished a nearly 20 year long development effort aimed to stabilize and empower the government and people of Sierra Leone.
​
Sierra Leone has a wealth of valuable natural resources but a civil war in 2001 destroyed many of the countries institutions. The country is currently working towards rebuilding it's infrastructure with hopes of resuming its export of natural minerals.
